One month of keto

Published on 7 Feb 2025

The last carby meal I ate was a chow mein, and that was 35 days ago. I've since lived on a diet of cheese, salad, vegetables, and sausages.

I wanted to check in with myself and see my progress, maybe it'll help someone who's considering doing this diet too.

Physical changes

  • I haven't weighed myself the whole time but I think I've lost 3-4kg so far. Last time I lost weight quickly at the start then plateud so I'm guessing the same will happen this time too, at some point?
  • I used to feel bloated quite often but I don't get that anymore.
  • I feel more focused and energetic through the day, rather than having dips and peaks after eating.
  • I need a lot more water! I felt hydrated before but now I feel thirsty all the time.

Life changes

  • I'm always thinking about food! Before I could just grab a sandwich or cook a bowl of pasta, but now every meal is a hurdle.
  • Chris and I loved cooking Gousto meals together and that's become a bit more of a hassle. We’re thinking about how to ‘adapt’ dishes for me (this usually is just having the meal but without the rice/pasta/bread)
  • I can't tell if I'm spending more or less money? I've lost access to lunchtime meal deals but I make more food at home instead. We also don't do so many takeaways which I guess is a plus!
  • I feel happier and more confident. Small things like clothes being looser, or being able to climb flights of stairs without feeling tired. I've started wearing clothes I wouldn't have considered before.

Hopes for the future

Dieting like this is definitely not a long term solution for me; I miss noodles and the occasional chocolate binge. But I know I can stick with it for a few months longer. I originally said May and that feels very possible, and I could even go for longer than that.

I have a weight goal, but that's secondary to feeling good and strong. Last time I did keto I wasn't doing any exercise, and I think the extra calorie loss/muscle growth will affect my journey.

I keep pointing delicious food out to Chris and saying “that'll be the first thing I eat when this is all over”, which is very dramatic but I love it.
